Suspensions and Replacements

adding and omitting we’re going to replace add and omit notes from the standard basic chords we’ve just learned to create new types of chords so first is replacing here’s our C major chord the scale degrees are one three five now we can replace that three and play a four instead [Music] a c suspended four chord we can also replace that three with a two Instead This is called a c suspended two chord both of these chords feel like you’re suspended like you’re suspended in air and you want to hit the ground there’s a sense of needing to resolve this wants to come down to here and this year wants to come up to here you can also resolve to the Minor triad and you’ll notice the sus4 has a stronger need to resolve than the sus2 and for the chord symbols we just write our C major chord symbol followed by sus4 and sus2 the sus stands for suspended now also if we add the flat 7 to that so 1 3 5 flat 7 we have our dominant seven chord and we can replace that three with this dominant seven chord as well so instead of three we can play four and now you have a C7 suspended four chord or you can play two and now you have a C7 suspended two chord and symbols wise we do the same thing we would write C7 followed by sus4 or sus2 so those are our dominant seven suspended chords and one more thing with chord symbols if it just says C sus or C7 sus it’s referring to the sus4 chord alright so these are the chord types where we replace notes so replacing the three for the four or the three for the two the next system of thinking is adding notes to our basic chords first we can add the sixth scale degree to our
